The 2026 National League Wild Card Series is a sprint, not a marathon. Four best-of-three series — two in the NL — all start on the same day and can be over in 72 hours. Regular season ends Sunday, Sept. 27. Game 1 is Tuesday, Sept. 29. Game 3, if needed, is Thursday, Oct. 1. Then the Division Series starts Saturday, Oct. 3.
That compressed window is why ticket demand spikes now, not in mid-October. Higher seeds host every Wild Card game. Once the field is set, inventory at Truist Park, Wrigley Field, Citizens Bank Park, and Petco Park moves fast.
2026 NL Wild Card dates
| Game | Date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Game 1 | Tuesday, Sept. 29 | All four Wild Card series (AL + NL) |
| Game 2 | Wednesday, Sept. 30 | Same sites, higher seed hosts |
| Game 3 | Thursday, Oct. 1 | If necessary |
| NLDS Game 1 | Saturday, Oct. 3 | Wild Card winners vs. Nos. 1–2 seeds |
Broadcast: NBC, Peacock, and NBC Sports Network for the Wild Card round. Dates can shift for weather; always confirm on MLB’s official postseason schedule.
How the NL bracket works
Six NL teams make the playoffs: three division winners and three Wild Cards.
- No. 1 and No. 2 seeds (best two division winners by record) get a bye to the NLDS.
- No. 3 seed (third division winner) hosts No. 6 (third Wild Card) in a best-of-three.
- No. 4 seed (best Wild Card) hosts No. 5 in the other series.
Home-field for the Wild Card is all games at the higher seed. There are no travel days and no split home-and-home. Format details are in MLB’s playoff FAQ.
As of Sept. 23, 2026, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, and Atlanta have clinched their divisions. The three Wild Card spots are a tight race among the Cubs, Padres, and Phillies, with Arizona several games back. Projected pairing often discussed: Braves vs. the No. 6 Wild Card, and Cubs vs. Padres if Chicago holds the No. 4 seed. Standings move daily — check MLB’s live playoff picture.
Potential NL Wild Card sites
These four parks are the ones fans are watching for first-round tickets:
- Truist Park (Atlanta) — Braves as likely No. 3 host
- Wrigley Field (Chicago) — Cubs fighting for the No. 4 host seed
- Citizens Bank Park (Philadelphia) — Phillies in the Wild Card mix
- Petco Park (San Diego) — Padres in the same three-team scrum
If a team is the lower seed, it travels. If it is the higher seed, every Wild Card game is at home. That is the difference between a three-game home stand and a road trip with no return date.
Ticket windows: don’t wait for clinch day
Teams are already selling potential Wild Card inventory. That is the window.
Chicago Cubs
Public on-sale for potential Wrigley Wild Card games (Sept. 29–Oct. 1) started Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. CT at cubs.com/postseason. Limit of four tickets per game; mobile tickets via the MLB Ballpark app. The “Fly the W” presale for later rounds remains open through Sept. 30.
Philadelphia Phillies
Potential Wild Card tickets at Citizens Bank Park went on sale Sept. 18 at phillies.com. Four-ticket limit. Separate NLDS inventory was slated for Sept. 25. Register at phillies.com/postseason for later-round drawings.
San Diego Padres
Season-ticket and waitlist presales ran Sept. 21–22. Local-resident Padres Insider presale Sept. 23 at 9 a.m. PT, general Insider at 4 p.m. PT, public at 5 p.m. PT at mlb.com/padres/tickets/postseason. Online only; no Petco box-office walk-up for this sale. Geo-restrictions applied to the local window.
Atlanta Braves
As a clinched division winner, Atlanta is the most likely NL Wild Card host (No. 3 vs. No. 6). Check braves.com and Ticketmaster for Truist Park potential Game 1–3 listings. Resale listings for “if necessary” Wild Card games are already live on secondary markets.
Ticketmaster’s MLB guide notes postseason tickets typically appear in September as teams clinch, and unused games on a series strip are refunded when bought through official channels. See Ticketmaster’s MLB FAQ and buyer’s guide.
How to buy without getting burned
- Start on the team site or MLB Ballpark app. That is official inventory. Barcodes often unlock 96 hours before first pitch. Screenshots usually will not scan.
- Expect mobile-only entry. Most clubs have said 2026 postseason tickets are digital only.
- Watch ticket limits. Four per game is common on public onsales.
- Compare all-in price. Official sites add fees at checkout. Resale sites may show a higher sticker but lock the total sooner.
- Know the refund rule. If Game 3 is not played, official purchases for that game are typically refunded. Speculative “TBD opponent” listings on resale can be riskier if the team does not host.
- Avoid last-second transfers. Playoff gates are tighter. Transfer in the Ballpark app, not via screenshot or last-minute email.
Authorized marketplaces include Ticketmaster (MLB partner), plus team-authorized resale. Secondary options fans commonly compare: SeatGeek, StubHub, Vivid Seats, Capital City Tickets. Always confirm the listing is for the exact game number and venue, not a generic “playoff strip.”
What tickets cost (ballpark ranges)
Playoff prices move with seeding and star power. Public listings in late September have shown wide spreads: lower-bowl and club seats at Wrigley, Citizens Bank, Petco, and Truist often land well above regular-season face, while upper deck and standing room can still be the entry point. Treat any number you see today as a snapshot — a clinch, a collapse, or a Game 3 rainout changes the market overnight.
If you only want one game, Game 1 usually has the most inventory and the most predictable travel. Game 3 is the gamble: cheapest if it happens, worthless if the series ends in two.
Quick FAQ
Does every playoff team play in the Wild Card?
No. NL Nos. 1 and 2 skip it.
Who hosts?
The higher seed hosts all three possible games.
When should I buy?
Public and member windows for potential hosts are already open this week. Waiting until after Sunday’s finale means competing with everyone who just learned the matchup.
Can I buy a full series?
Some clubs sell by game; some offer strips for potential home games. Read the product title. “If necessary” means the game may not be played.
What about World Series tickets?
Separate process. Capital One’s 2026 World Series purchase opportunity registration opened Sept. 23 at noon ET on MLB.com. That is not Wild Card inventory.
Bottom line
The NL Wild Card is four series packed into three days. The schedule is locked. The teams are not — not until Sept. 27. Ticket windows for the parks most likely to host are open now. If you want a seat at Wrigley, Citizens Bank, Petco, or Truist next week, treat this week as the buy window, not next Tuesday morning.
