The American League Wild Card is locked on the calendar even if the last seed is not. Game 1 is Tuesday, Sept. 29. Game 2 is Wednesday, Sept. 30. If a series is still tied, Game 3 is Thursday, Oct. 1. All four Wild Card series — two AL, two NL — play on those same three days. The regular season ends Sunday, Sept. 27. The ALDS then opens Saturday, Oct. 3.
That is a three-day sprint at the higher seed’s park. No split series. No mid-round travel. If you want a seat, the buy window is this week, not next Tuesday morning.

How AL seeding works
Six AL teams qualify: three division winners and three Wild Cards.
- No. 1 and No. 2 (best two division winners by record) get a bye to the ALDS.
- No. 3 (third division winner) hosts No. 6 (third Wild Card) in a best-of-three.
- No. 4 (best Wild Card) hosts No. 5.
The higher seed hosts every Wild Card game. Division winners are seeded ahead of Wild Cards even if a Wild Card has a better record. Full rules: MLB playoff format FAQ.
Potential AL teams and parks (as of Sept. 23)
The picture is still moving through Sunday, but the field is taking shape:
- Tampa Bay Rays — clinched the AL East and are in line for a first-round bye. Tropicana Field would host ALDS games, not the Wild Card, if they stay No. 1 or No. 2.
- Cleveland Guardians — AL Central leaders and a likely bye or No. 3 host at Progressive Field.
- Houston Astros / Texas Rangers — AL West still tight. The division winner can skip the Wild Card or host as No. 3 at Daikin Park or Globe Life Field.
- New York Yankees — Wild Card position; potential No. 4 host at Yankee Stadium.
- Boston Red Sox — clinched a Wild Card; Fenway host only if they out-seed their opponent.
- Chicago White Sox — in the final-spot mix; Rate Field listings are already up for potential home Games 1–3.

Matchups discussed most this week: Yankees vs. Red Sox in one series, and a No. 3 division winner (Rangers or another West/Central club) vs. White Sox in the other. That can flip with one weekend sweep.
Where tickets are on sale now
New York Yankees — Yankee Stadium
Potential Wild Card, ALDS, and ALCS tickets are listed as on sale at yankees.com/tickets/postseason. Resale already shows “AL Wild Card vs. TBD” for Sept. 29–Oct. 1. Season-plan strip presales ran earlier in September.
Boston Red Sox — Fenway Park
Public inventory is limited. The club ran a Wild Card/ALDS registration window Sept. 14–18, with a drawing around Sept. 21. Selected fans can buy up to four tickets for one game, subject to availability. Register and terms: redsox.com postseason purchase opportunity. Fenway “if necessary” listings on the secondary market are already thin.
Chicago White Sox — Rate Field
Ticketmaster is showing Wild Card Home Game 1–3 for Sept. 29–Oct. 1. Secondary listings start in a lower range than Yankee Stadium or Fenway. Check whitesox.com and the Rate Field event pages.
Texas Rangers — Globe Life Field
Official single-game pages list AL Wild Card Games 1–3 on Sept. 29–Oct. 1. Lone Star Members get digital tickets in the MLB Ballpark app; barcodes typically unlock 96 hours before first pitch. Screenshots are not valid entry. Details: Rangers postseason FAQs.
Houston Astros — Daikin Park
ALWC/ALDS member presale started Sept. 22 at 9 a.m. CT; public on-sale the same day at 1 p.m. CT. Unused games on official purchases are refunded if not played. Astros postseason presale.
Ticketmaster’s MLB guide: postseason tickets usually appear in September as teams clinch, and unplayed games bought through official channels are refunded. See the MLB ticket FAQ and buyer’s guide.
How to buy without getting burned
- Start on the club site or MLB Ballpark app for face-value inventory.
- Expect mobile-only tickets. Transfer in the app, not by screenshot.
- Read the listing title. “If necessary” and “TBD opponent” means the game may not be played or may not be in that city.
- Official unused Wild Card games are typically refunded. Resale refund rules vary by marketplace.
- Compare all-in price. Fenway and Yankee Stadium carry the steepest premiums; Rate Field and some Texas/Houston inventory can be the cheaper entry.
- Game 1 has the most inventory. Game 3 is the swing game — cheapest if it happens, a refund if it does not.
Authorized and commonly used marketplaces: Ticketmaster, team sites, SeatGeek, StubHub, Vivid Seats, Capital City Tickets. Confirm venue, game number, and entry rules before you pay.
Quick FAQ
Does every AL playoff team play in the Wild Card?
No. The top two division winners get a bye.
Who hosts?
The higher seed hosts all three possible games.
When do first pitches start?
Times are TBA until the bracket is set after Sept. 27.
Should I buy before Sunday?
If you want a specific park (Yankee Stadium, Fenway, Rate Field, Globe Life, Daikin), yes. Public and member windows are already open.
What about World Series tickets?
Separate lottery-style process. Capital One’s 2026 World Series registration opened Sept. 23 at noon ET on MLB.com. That is not Wild Card stock.
Bottom line
The 2026 AL Wild Card dates are set: Sept. 29, Sept. 30, and Oct. 1 if needed. The teams are not set until Sunday. Yankees, Red Sox, White Sox, Rangers, Astros, Guardians, and Rays are the names driving ticket searches. Higher seeds host every pitch. If you want in for that three-day window, treat this week as the sale — the series itself will not wait.
